August is National Civility Month

National Civility Month was established to help us remember to treat others the way we wish to be treated: with kindness, empathy and respect. Here are some tips for practicing civility not just this month, but every month:

  • Be Observant & Considerate : Try to appreciate what other people may be going through.
  • Acknowledge Other People: Make time to recognize others, whether by remembering their name, congratulating a team member or simply saying thank you.
  • Be Inclusive: No one likes to feel left out. If you realize you’ve unintentionally excluded someone, acknowledge the mistake and apologize.
  • Respect Even a Subtle “No”: A basic rule of respect is accepting another person’s “no,” even if they don’t use the word “no.” This may be especially important in communications between supervisors and team members.
  • Respect Others’ Time: Be careful to not send the message that your time is more important than that of others.

August is also Child Support Awareness Month

The goal is to raise awareness this month about a critical income support program that helps millions of children and families. Child support programs collected $29.6 billion nationwide and served one in five children in the U.S in 2023. In total, Wayne County Friend of the Court distributed nearly $213 million in child support payments last year.

The importance of our DEI mission

The Third Circuit Court Diversity and Inclusion Team’s Mission is as follows:

We appreciate our common connection and respect our diverse and unique

human experiences. We move forward as an inclusive organization

as we provide accessible and equal justice.

The Court’s Diversity & Inclusion Team strives to ensure the values of its diverse bench, staff, and court users are acknowledged and reflected in our delivery of service as well as our work environment.

In that spirit, the team creates and shares a monthly list of various holidays and observations along with some celebration suggestions. We invite our work community and the community at large to contribute.

“We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we all must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.” – Maya Angelou
