Subject: Third Circuit Court’s Chief Judgeship Transition


Detroit, MI - The Chief Judgeship transition at Third Circuit Court is underway. Chief Judge Robert J. Colombo, Jr. will hang up his robe at the end of the year after 35 years of judicial service, and the last five years as the Chief Judge. The Supreme Court announced that Judge Timothy M. Kenny will succeed Colombo and begin January 2, 2019 as the Chief Judge of Michigan’s largest trial court. Judge Kenny has been on the bench 22 years and founded and served on the Mental Health Court. Judge Kenny is active in the community and serves on
various advisory boards. He was recently honored by The Neighborhood Legal Services Michigan for his work. Judge Kenny will continue to move the Court forward on its Strategic Plan and in fostering innovation and creativity to ensure “the best ideas win.”

Judge Kenny has appointed the following judges to leadership roles with our court:
Chief Judge Pro Tem and Presiding Judge, Civil Division – Judge Patricia P. Fresard
Presiding Judge, Criminal Division – Judge Prentis Edwards, Jr.
Presiding Judge, Family Division – Judge Kathleen M. McCarthy
Presiding Judge, Juvenile Division – Judge Edward J. Joseph

These appointments are effective January 2, 2019.
