Subject:   Appointment of Judge David A. Groner to the Third Circuit Court’s Business Court


Detroit, MI – The Third Judicial Circuit Court is pleased to announce the Michigan Supreme Court has appointed the Honorable David A. Groner to the Third Circuit Court’s Business Court. On March 18, 2021, The Michigan Supreme Court announced this appointment. Judge Groner will serve as a Business Court judge for a term expiring
April 1, 2025.

Honorable David A. Groner was appointed to the Wayne County Circuit Court in 2003. He served in the Criminal Division for fourteen years. For the past four years, he has served in the Civil Division, where he has handled specialty dockets such as structured settlements, in addition to the traditional docket. Judge Groner was the University of Michigan Mentor of the Year 2007 and received the State of Israel Bonds Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award in 2006. Additionally, he is a member of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association and the Michigan Judge’s Association. Judge Groner also authored the foreword for the 2010 Wayne Law Review Annual Survey of Michigan Law. Prior to joining the bench, Judge Groner was a sole practitioner.

He earned his Juris Doctor in 1985 from the University of Detroit Mercy. Judge Groner was an evening law student and simultaneously worked full-time as a court clerk in the 6th Circuit Court for Judge James Thorburn. Judge Groner has a B.A. in History from the University of Michigan.

Upon receiving the news of his appointment, Judge Groner stated, “I am honored to be appointed by the Michigan Supreme Court to serve as a Business Court Judge in the Third Judicial Circuit. I look forward to this new opportunity to serve the needs of the business community in Wayne County.”



The Mission of Third Judicial Circuit Court is to provide accessible and equal justice with timely dispute resolution. The Third Judicial Circuit has jurisdiction over Civil, Criminal, and Family matters arising in the County of Wayne. The National Center for State Courts has cited the Third Circuit Court as one of the model urban courts in the United States for case flow management and the timely disposition of the Court’s docket.
