b'Table 3: Lessons Learned / Take-Aways from the Pandemic 1.Zoom/Virtual Hearings: Learned Zoom/virtual hearings can be an effective tool; Zoom is effective for some types of hearings/matters; it improves access to justice, increases convenience, saves time and money (e.g., higher participation rates of parents and children; dont have to take time off work or school to participate; dont have to drive or pay for parking, etc.); need to have accommodations for some people (e.g., head injuries) 2.Need for In-Person Hearings: There is still a need/desire for some in-person hearings; some dockets have been negatively impacted by virtual proceedings (e.g., referrals); some types of proceedings and/or cases are more appropriate for in-person matters 3.Access: It taught how many people can be adversely impacted by lack of access to services and hearings; had to reimagine how to deliver services, conduct court hearings, expectations for privacy/appearing in court, etc. 4.Abilities of the Public: It is important not to underestimate our community/publicpartners, court users, etc.; many preferred zoom; had success connecting and participating; learned about resilience of litigants; most able to handle technology; will likely increase with younger generations comfort with and usage of technology 5.Digital Divide: not everyone is at the same level or has the technology/internet access; going entirely virtual / electronic / digital may deny access to some people who dont have technology or internet access, or the knowledge / skills / comfort to use it 6.Reliance on Paper: Pandemic exposed weakness in relying on paper; had to embrace technology; make records more accessible 7.Remote Work: Learned: some level of remote work can work in the Court. Can continue to improve. 8.Emergency Preparedness: Importance of having an emergency plan 9.Importance of Agility and Resilience: Learned the importance of flexibility, agility, resilience; need to experiment and find alternative solutions to problems 10. Hybrid Meetings: there are some reasons to meet virtually and some to meet in person; learned some virtual meetings can be more efficient, increase participation, save time; need to be deliberate/ intentional about when to do in-person and virtual meetings 11. Re-think/Repurpose Space: New ways of working present opportunities to critically examine how using facilities/space and repurpose to meet needs and to be cost effective (e.g., judges may not need a dedicated courtroom; might benefit when looking at Civil justice complex; use space efficiently; may need dedicated courtrooms(full scale courtrooms vs. alternatives); need to look at space differently; be intentional/be creative 12.
